CHCF Latin Legacy Culinary Competition 2008

The Committee for Hispanic Children and Families’ 2nd Annual Latin Legacy Culinary Competition was held this past Tuesday February 12 at the Institute of Culinary Education (ICE). The contestants apply by writing an essay describing why they feel they should be chosen to compete, and submit an original recipe.

Austin Crespo, Richard Ayala, Michael Resto, and Alfredo de Leon

I have to tell you right off the bat, that I was very impressed with the skills these boys showed. They were allotted two hours, and they managed to execute their dishes in 90

minutes! Here are a few highlights:

The aspiring chefs to be worked diligently and presented their finished dishes to the panel of judges, which included chef, author,  and friend extraordinaire Chris Styler, myself and CHCF’s Executive Director, Elba Montalvo (who purposely skips lunch when she judges these competitions!).

After much discussion and deliberation, the winner, who will receive a half a scholarship to ICE, was chosen. Austin Crespo, and his recipe for Ceviche de Crespo (with his special secret blend of 11 herbs and spices!), won first place. Congratulations, Austin and congratulations to Richard (2nd place), Michael, and Alfredo for a terrific competition!

A very special thank you to Chef Andrew Gold, for supervising the contestants, and making sure that everything ran smoothly in the kitchen, to ICE for hosting this event and their generous contribution, and to CHCF for organizing the competition. I can’t wait for next year!
